Los créditos / Credits

Creo que es importante escribir un poco de mi experiencia tomando los cursos que requiere el gobierno de Estados Unidos. 


Como Au Pair tienes que cursar 6 créditos académicos (que equivalen a 72-90 horas de estudio) por año. La familia te da 500 dólares para ayudarte a pagarlos. 


I think it is important to write a little about my experience taking the courses that the US government requires. 


As an Au Pair, you have to take 6 academic credits (equal to 72-90 hours of study) per year. The host family gives you 500 dollars to help you pay for them. 


La mayoría de las ciudades tienen muchas opciones de cursos pero los que nosotros tenemos que buscar son los que se llaman "CONTINUING EDUCATION." Es algo estresante buscar cursos así que te recomiendo que desde antes de irte tengas una idea de qué es lo que te gustaría estudiar. Si puedes pedirle a tu Host Family que te mande información or links a páginas de las universidades cercanas, házlo. Es muy importante que desde el principio empieces a buscar cursos porque usualmente empiezan por semestre y si llegas a mitad de semestre te tienes que esperar. 

Most cities have lots of course options but the ones we have to look for are called CONTINUING EDUCATION. It is a little stressful to look for courses, so I advise you to have an idea of what you want to study before you leave. If you can, ask your Host Family to send you information or links to the websites of nearby universities.  It is very important that you start looking for courses right from the start because they usually start every semester and if you arrive in the middle of one, you'll have to wait. 


Conocí a muchas Au Pairs que lo dejaron a la última hora y estaban preocupadas por no cumplir el requisito. Toma en cuenta que si quieres extender, no lo puedes hacer si no tienes prueba que cursaste esos cursos. Si no vas a extender, no te van a reembolsar tu depósito si no tienes los créditos. Tienes que tomarlos, no hay de otra. 

I met many Au Pairs who left it to the last minute and the were worried cause they hadn't fulfilled that requirement. Keep in mind that if you want to extend, you cannot do it if you don't have proof that you took the courses. If you won't extend, they won't refund you your deposit without the credits. You must take them, there is no way around it.


También debes tomar en cuenta que los cursos no pueden interferir con tu trabajo como Au Pair a menos que llegues a un acuerdo con la familia. Por eso es importante tomarte tu tiempo para buscar un curso que te interese, que puedas pagar y que quede con tu horario de trabajo. 

You should also keep in mind that the courses cannot interfere with your work as Au Pair unless you reach an agreement with the family. This is why it is important to take your time to look for a course that interests you, is affordable and suits your work schedule. 


Yo tomé varios cursos en mis dos años. La mayoría fueron cursos especiales para Au Pairs que me encantaron y que recomiendo muchísimo. En ellos, tomas clases con Au Pairs lo Sábados y cada clase está enfocada en enseñar sobre la cultura de USA, el estilo de vida, etc. Además de las clases, se organiza un viaje a "X" ciudad por todo un fin de semana. 

I took several courses in my two years. Most of them were special courses for Au Pairs, which I loved and highly recommend. In them, you take classes with other Au Pairs on Saturdays and each class is focused on teaching about US culture, lifestyle, etc. Apart from classes, they organize a trip to "X" city for an entire weekend. 


Yo tomé 4 cursos (3 créditos cada uno). La primera vez viajé a Boston, la segunda a Chicago, la tercera a Quebéc City (antes de que pidieran visa Canadiense a los Mexicanos) y la última a Philadelphia.


I took 4 courses (3 credits each). The first time I traveled to Boston, the second to Chicago, the third to Quebéc City (before Mexicans were required to have a Canadian visa) and the fourth time to Philadelphia.


Desafortunadamente, no todas las ciudades tienen esta opción, pero siempre le puedes preguntar a tu LCC si sabe de cursos para Au Pairs o que te recomiende escuelas donde otras Au Pairs han tomado sus cursos.


Unfortunately, not every city has this option but you can always ask your LCC if they know of similar courses for Au Pairs or to recommend you schools where other Au Pairs have studied.



Si estás más interesada en tomar algún otro curso (idiomas, periodismo, arte, leyes, etc, etc, etc) es posible pero usualmente son más caros. Si ese es el caso, tienes que contemplar el gasto extra porque la familia no puede darte más de los 500 dólares. 

If you are more interested on taking another course (languages, journalism, art, law, etc, etc, etc) it is possible but they tend to be more expensive. If that is the case, you must be aware of that extra expense because the family cannot give you more than 500 dollars. 


De cualquier forma, esos créditos valen mucho la pena. Te ayudan a salir un poco de la rutina, conoces más gente y tienes "estudios en el extranjero" que se van a ver bien bonitos en tu CV. Créeme; ¡se bien muuuuy padres en el mío! 

Either way, those credits are really worth it. They help you get out of the routine, you meet more people and you'll have "studies abroad" that will look real nice in your CV. Trust me, they look pretty cool in mine!
