Q&A with a Male Au Pair in the US

Hi everyone! :-h

As many of you know, being an Au Pair is mostly common among women BUT men CAN also be Au Pairs. Yes, they can! Even though a lot of people think that Au Pairing is something that women can do better than men, many host families would disagree with you. There are some that even prefer men over women because they think their kids will be safer with them or they'll be more active and sporty.

Here is an interview with a male Au Pair I met while we were both Au Pairs in Boston in 2009. I'm trying to get more interviews from other male Au Pairs I met so please stay tuned! B-)

Please write one or two paragraphs about your experience as an Au Pair in the US. You could start by saying why did you want to be an Au Pair and how did you get childcare experience? Was it hard to adapt to a new life? What did you study? Where did you live? What was your host family like and how many children did you take care of? What did you do in your free time? What was the best and worst experience? Etc, etc.
Jan Kratochvil, Czech AuPair, June 2008 to June 2009, Tewksbury, Massachusetts

I became an AuPair because it is, by far, the easiest and the best way to learn about American culture. Throughout my teenage years, I functioned as a boy-scout leader which is my only childcare experience. It wasn't hard to adapt to the life in the U.S. I was lucky having had the opportunity to live in Scotland, The Netherlands and Greece prior to my arrival to the U.S. and therefore no cultural shock happened in my case. As far as studies, I took a four-credit course "Media, Democracy and Development" at Harvard Extension School. My LCC forgave me the remaining two credits. My hosts were truly nice; there were four quadruplet boys I took care of and we got along very well. Most of my spare time was filled with travelling and parties. My best experience was sexual intercourse with a black woman. We don't have dark-skinned people back in Czech Republic and therefore I have always felt attracted by them. My dream came true once I got to the U.S. The worst experience was an arrest in New Hampshire. I was arrested for driving without a valid drivers license, spent a night in custody and had to go to the court.
1. During the matching process, was it difficult for you to find a host family that wanted a male Au Pair? Did it seem to you that girls had preference?
It wasn't difficult at all to find a host family. It is crucial to realize while the overall demand for boys is significantly smaller than for girls, at the same time the number of boys applying for this job is drastically lower than the number of girls. I actually refused two families (one in California and another in Indiana) before accepting the request from my host family in Massachusetts.
2. How did your friends and family react when you told them you were going to be an Au Pair? How did people react to it once you were in the US? Did you ever feel people thought that wasn't a job for men?
Friends and family didn't comprehend at the beginning. They thought I was not serious, and when they realized I was serious, they thought I would not last very long. Similarly, people in the U.S. thought I was kidding once I mentioned I am a nanny. Yes, I did feel people perceive this job as a "women job" only.
3. What sort of activities did you do with the kids? Do you think that what you did was very different from what female Au Pairs did? For example, did you do more sports or were you expected to do heavier-duty housework?
The scale of activities I did with the kids is very wide. Most of the activities were sport related. Yet, we would do other things such as arts & crafts, make believe games, reading, etc. Due to the fact I had four boys, there was no heavy duty housework required from me.
4. Regarding your social life, how easy/difficult was it for you to socialize in a female-dominant environment?
I did not have the problem of being surrounded just by females. Fortunately, I met great amount of other male AuPairs, especially from Germany, with whom I would spent a lot of time.
5. A lot of host families think twice about hiring male Au Pairs because of concerns about sexual abuse (especially when they have daughters) and other generalizations like, "men can't cook and aren't as nurturing as women." What would you say to them?
To the families who are arguing in favor of female AuPairs, I would say following: The only point I am willing to accept is that females are being more nurturing then males. I would object to all the others:
- There is a lots of girls who have no idea how to cook. Yet, plenty of males are excellent cooks. In fact, the best and most famous cooks in the world are males. This argument might have been valid 50 years ago, when men were a work force and women stayed at home, but it is no longer so.
- I have never heard of a single case of child abuse. Again, all the tragedies (nanny killing two children in New York, another nanny strangling a child in Boston etc.) were caused by females.
There is actually great amount of good reasons to hire a male AuPair. First of all, men tend to be better drivers. Then, men are more rational, flexible, easy-going and not too emotional. Finally, men are less likely to get homesick and they will more likely handle extreme situations

BE A TOURIST

FOLLOW THE SEASONS

WHAT INTERESTS YOU?

http://www.meetup.com/
https://www.couchsurfing.org/

Conocì a muchos fotògrafos quienes me dieron muchos tips.

Hola a todas!

GO LOCAL

Como mi ex-editor Canadiense me dijo una vez: "You can't have too many skills."

L.L. Bean en New England organiza muchas actividades.

Buen ejercicio ;)

Exploren lugares desconocidos!

Hello everyone!

I was finally able to upload this map. I'm very clumsy with Photoshop and Illustrator and it rook me a veeeery long time to put it together.

I  used different color dots on cities that I visited in the US between 2007-2009. I'm thinking of starting a second blog focused on talking about my experiences when I traveled and sharing tips.

A lot of people have written to me because they want to know where I traveled to and how I did it. If anybody has specific questions, leave a comment!

Primera familia, primer re-match / First family, first rematch

Agencies always say that we must be patient when waiting for matches. They say that the "perfect match" will arrive sooner or later and that we shouldn't loose patience. THEY ARE RIGHT.

Lately, there has been a higher demand of families and many times the Au Pair agencies have more girls/guys available than families. Obviously, this affects the match-making process.

I've seen that many people wait for months to get a family and that sometimes they are so desperate to travel that they accept the first family that contacts them just so they can leave soon. I know because that is exactly what I did with my first family and I regretted it.

I was waiting for a family for a couple of months. After having several matches (and without being contacted), I was finally contacted via email by a family and then they called me.

I had experience with kids between the ages of three and seven but this family had one eight-year boy and one twelve-year old girl. They lived in Virginia (a Washigton D.C. suburb) and they already had a Mexican Au Pair who stayed with them for a year and a half. I talked to the Au Pair and she was very straight-forward. She gave me the family's pros and cons, described the kids' tempers and talked to me about the area. Not everything turned out okay for her but because I wanted to leave already I accepted that family without thinking about the consequences of not being with my "perfect match."

A pesar de tener una buena LCC
y varios amigos, es mejor
estar con una familia con

la que se sientan felices. /
Despite on having a good LCC and many
friends, it's better to be with a family
that you're happy with.

After three months with the Virginia family I decided that I didn't want to be with them anymore. Why? Because I didn't get along with the kids, especially with the eight-year old boy. He was very disrespectful and spoiled and it was very hard to deal with him. The twelve-year old girl was in her room talking on the phone most of the time. The parents were pretty cool and I enjoyed talking to them. The area was pretty, I had freedom and spare time to hang out with my friends.

However, the problems with the boy prevented me from enjoying my time there. It is vital to be at ease with the kids because they are the ones you spend most of your time with. If there is no bond with the kids, it is best to change.

¡Tenía mi propio carro! OJO:
No dejen que las ventajas
materiales influyan en
su decisión. / I had my own car!
BEWARE: Don't let the material
advantages influence in their decision.

I talked to my LCC and told her that I wanted to leave. After that, I told the mum and she was a little sad but accepted my decision. We organized a meeting with the LCC, we talked about what didn't work out, what were we looking for in a new macth and when would I leave.

From the moment you decide to ask for a re-match, you have to be aware that you'll have a hard time or at least an uncomfortable one because no family likes to know that their Au Pair isn't happy with them. You have to be strong, stay cool and do your best at work.

I think it is important to write a little about my experience taking the courses that the US government requires.

As an Au Pair, you have to take 6 academic credits (equal to 72-90 hours of study) per year. The host family gives you 500 dollars to help you pay for them.

Most cities have lots of course options but the ones we have to look for are called CONTINUING EDUCATION. It is a little stressful to look for courses, so I advise you to have an idea of what you want to study before you leave. If you can, ask your Host Family to send you information or links to the websites of nearby universities.  It is very important that you start looking for courses right from the start because they usually start every semester and if you arrive in the middle of one, you'll have to wait.

I met many Au Pairs who left it to the last minute and the were worried cause they hadn't fulfilled that requirement. Keep in mind that if you want to extend, you cannot do it if you don't have proof that you took the courses. If you won't extend, they won't refund you your deposit without the credits. You must take them, there is no way around it.

You should also keep in mind that the courses cannot interfere with your work as Au Pair unless you reach an agreement with the family. This is why it is important to take your time to look for a course that interests you, is affordable and suits your work schedule.

I took several courses in my two years. Most of them were special courses for Au Pairs, which I loved and highly recommend. In them, you take classes with other Au Pairs on Saturdays and each class is focused on teaching about US culture, lifestyle, etc. Apart from classes, they organize a trip to "X" city for an entire weekend.

I took 4 courses (3 credits each). The first time I traveled to Boston, the second to Chicago, the third to Quebéc City (before Mexicans were required to have a Canadian visa) and the fourth time to Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, not every city has this option but you can always ask your LCC if they know of similar courses for Au Pairs or to recommend you schools where other Au Pairs have studied.

If you are more interested on taking another course (languages, journalism, art, law, etc, etc, etc) it is possible but they tend to be more expensive. If that is the case, you must be aware of that extra expense because the family cannot give you more than 500 dollars.

Either way, those credits are really worth it. They help you get out of the routine, you meet more people and you'll have "studies abroad" that will look real nice in your CV. Trust me, they look pretty cool in mine!

Viaje a Alaska 2009/Trip to Alaska 2009

Cruzando el círculo ártico! Crossing the arctic circle!

Si volviera a vivir mi vida sería Au Pair otra vez.

If I had my life to live over I would be an Au Pair again. Without a doubt. It changed my life. I couldn't finish telling you all the experiences I lived (which you can also live), so I will talk about the best one, the number one in my Top 10, the experience that showed me a new world and thanks to which I witnessed a wonder that many people never do in the course of their own lives. I'm talking about my trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, in Marcho 2009.

During my second year as an Au Pair I began to travel a lot. I wanted to see the United States, learn about its different regions, meet people and see climates and cultures that I wouldn't find in Mexico. That is how, one day while I was sleeping my subconscious told me I should see the northern lights. I woke up, literally, wanting to see it.

My LCC, Liane, was always supportive and she gave me some tips to help me plan my trip. I did a lot of research and I finally decided that I would go to Alaska to celebrate my 21st birthday. My host mum moved a lot of things around so that I could go on the dates that I wanted to, while the triplets I took care of we as excited as I was when I told them about my plans. The difficult part was affording it because I had to live off 20 bucks a week for three months to be able to afford it. If you have lived in the US, you'll know that 20 dollars isn't anything. However, every time I found a new activity to do in Alaska, bought snow gear or whenever my Norweigan friend Silje gave me tips to not die of cold, I remembered that it was really worth it. I confirmed this when, after almost half a day of flights and layovers, I exited the Fairbanks airport at 1am covered in so many layers of clothes that I looked like Michelin and I experienced for the first time in my life the cold of -20º Celsius.

I always traveled on my own and stayed in hostels because it gave me more of an opportunity to meet new people and move at my own pace. That was how I ended up joining an expedition of "birdwatchers" with the locals and listened to their stories of how, instead of taking a bus or a taxi to the center of the town, they skied and, sometimes on their way there, came across grizzly bears and how they skinned them on their front yard, right in front of everyone! That is considered perfectly normal. I also learned that there were people in that area who lived off the land. They didn't work or bought a lot of things. They built their own houses and live off what they hunt and find in the forests.

 Nieve, montañas y pinos árticos.
Snow, mountains & arctic pines.

As I listened to those stories, I felt I had traveled back in time. I felt I was in a Gold Rush movie, in which people looked for gold in mines and fought against animals to survive the winter.

Another aspect of that trip that had an impact on me was the landscape: there. Wasn't. Anything. Nothing. I was in Fairbanks, a very small city and when I left it on a tour, I only saw snow, mountains and pines. You must remember that I was in the interior of Alaska, the climate is alpine tundra and it basically has two seasons: winter and summer. That was definitely something I wouldn't find in Mexico!

The tour I mentioned was a day trip to cross the arctic circle. The arctic circle. Look it up in a map so that you get an idea of where I ended up.

We drove for about seven hours until we reached the circle, which is basically a line that mars where Earth's Arctic Circle begins. Temperature was about -30º Celsius and the gust of wind was about 80km/hr. We slid on arctic snow and the snow that fell on my face melted but it immediately froze and I ended up with ice on my eyelashes! The moment I stood next to the sign was... Magical. I was, quite literally, on the top of the world. I felt there wasn't anything I couldn't do.

Next day, Mount Redoubt erupted. All flights were cancelled and I had to stay an extra night. That was the night that I saw the northern lights.

Temperatura: -30º Celsius.
Velocidad del viento: 80km/h
Temperature: -30º Celsius.
Gust of Wind: 80km/h.

The sky was dark, it was about 12am and a green light that went from horizon to horizon, lit up everything. It moved like a ribbon underwater. As I stared at it, while taking photos and wondering whether I would freeze to death, I realized that I had accomplished my goals. I had set my mind to go to Alaska and see the northern lights and now, I was standing on snow facing the northern lights. You know what was the best thing? The satisfaction of realizing that I had done all of it on my own. The independence, tenacity and determination that I gained during my first year took me to that moment, which has been the best moment of my life so far and I know I will never forget it.
